De Graafschap supporters blocked the club’s players’ bus at its Doetinchem stadium on Sunday, disrupting its planned journey to Arnhem for a match against Vitesse. Club director Marco Bogers said the bus could not leave and the scheduled 12.15 kick-off would not be possible as planned while the club consulted police and others.
The protest followed a decision by Arnhem’s local authorities on Saturday to bar De Graafschap away supporters from the match at the GelreDome. The authorities said some supporters would not comply with agreed safety measures, including rules on bringing atmosphere materials into the ground, according to regional broadcaster REGIO8.
De Graafschap said it did not recognise the authorities’ account and described their communication as unacceptable. The club said it had made efforts to find a solution and took its responsibility for a safe match seriously. It urged supporters not to travel to Arnhem.
The away end was set to remain empty for a second year running. The available reports do not establish what ultimately happened to Sunday’s match.
