Mikey Lewis has the chance to help rescue England’s Rugby League World Cup campaign against Papua New Guinea on Friday, after scoring twice in their 82-0 win over France. The Hull KR half-back says he has earned his place despite criticism of his selection and a season marred by disciplinary problems.
England’s hopes are precarious after a 30-12 defeat by Tonga. To reach the semi-finals, they must beat Papua New Guinea, hope Tonga defeat Samoa on Sunday and overturn a 68-point points-difference deficit against Samoa.
Lewis, 25, came off the bench for the final 20 minutes against France and scored both his tries. He is expected to start among the interchanges again against Papua New Guinea.
“[The way] my year went wouldn’t be the best. I don’t need anyone else to tell me,” Lewis told reporters on Wednesday. “I just had to put myself in the shop window. I have earned my spot.”
Coach Brian McDermott selected Lewis ahead of Jake Connor, the 2025 Super League Man of Steel, as one of England’s three half-back options alongside Harry Smith and captain George Williams. Lewis was then left out of the side for the opening defeat by Tonga, adding to debate over his inclusion.
His domestic season offered reasons for both confidence and concern. Lewis scored 17 tries and made 14 assists in 20 Super League appearances in 2026, but also received four yellow cards, more than any other player in the division.
A four-game ban followed a late tackle and a headbutt during a July defeat by Warrington Wolves. Lewis has acknowledged that his team-mates suffered because of his disciplinary problems and is seeking outside help with his on-field temperament.
After his two-try appearance against France, Lewis said he had been told to run with the ball. “I wanted to play with a smile on my face,” he said. He added that he was proud to represent England, whether his role lasted 20 minutes or longer.
