Keith Alexander’s family and former players have reflected on his influence on Black football managers in BBC interviews for Black History Month. Their accounts revisit a career in which he helped guide Lincoln City from administration to the League Two play-offs in four successive seasons. [1]
Alexander first took charge of Lincoln in 1993 and returned as manager in 2002. He later managed Peterborough United and Macclesfield. He was not the Football League’s first permanent Black manager: Tony Collins took charge of Rochdale in 1960. [1]
His son Matt recalls racism directed at Alexander during his playing career, including bananas being thrown. Another son, Paul, says race was rarely discussed at home but believes his father felt he had to work twice as hard. Former Lincoln striker Franny Green remembers Alexander giving non-league players opportunities, while former player Simon Weaver recalls his ability to unite a dressing room. [1]
Leon Mann, co-founder of the Football Black List, says Alexander’s story continues to inspire others. Mann believes Alexander’s contribution played a part in paving the way for Black managers in the Premier League. The Football Black List gives an award in his memory. [1]
Alexander died aged 53 in 2010 while managing Macclesfield, after falling ill at a match. He also founded the Sacred Sports Foundation in St Lucia to help young people through sport. [1]
