Brazil has halted deposits to online gambling sites under a presidential decree issued by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Friday, 25 September 2026, ANP/Reuters reported in a dispatch published by Nieuws.nl. The move comes amid growing concern about gambling’s impact on household budgets and debt. [1]
Finance Minister Dario Durigan said app stores and internet providers must block online gambling websites from 6 October. Users can still withdraw their money until then, giving them a window to retrieve funds before the blocking requirement takes effect. [1]
Durigan described online gambling as a public-health problem. His ministry estimates that Brazilian households spend approximately 60 billion reais — more than €10 billion — on it each year. The restrictions mark a reversal less than two years after the government explicitly allowed online gambling. [1]
The decree comes ahead of the first round of Brazil’s elections on 4 October, two days before the website blocks are due to begin. [1]
The measure is set to apply for at least 120 days, after which congressional approval will be needed for it to remain in force. [1]
