The mayor’s updated toll follows an earlier report of one death. President Zelensky says energy infrastructure was the main target of the assault.
A second body was found in a damaged nine-storey apartment block in Kyiv’s Desnianskyi district after Tuesday night’s Russian ballistic missile attack, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. He reported 21 people injured across the district, including an eight-year-old. Sixteen were taken to hospital and four were in a serious condition. [2]
An earlier ANP/Reuters report carried by Nieuws.nl put the toll at one dead and 17 injured. Klitschko’s later figures supersede that initial count. [1] [2] Photographs published by The Kyiv Independent show rescuers helping people at the block; Reuters reported footage of firefighters directing hoses at its damaged exterior. [5] [4]
President Volodymyr Zelensky said energy infrastructure was the main target of the attack and that a strike had hit the grounds of one of Kyiv’s main power plants. His office said fire had spread through flats on the first eight floors of the residential building as people were evacuated. [3]
Zelensky also said Ukraine had received no advance warning of the ballistic missile launch from its partners, for the second time that week. US President Donald Trump has said Washington is still sharing intelligence with Ukraine, Reuters reported. [3] [4]
The Kyiv Independent reported hearing more explosions during a second wave of attacks early on Wednesday. It had no immediate assessment of damage from that later wave. [5]
