New Zealand survived a scare in their opening match of the Women’s Rugby League World Cup, recovering from a 12-4 deficit to beat tournament debutants Fiji 18-12 in Newcastle on Sunday. The Ferns had never trailed at half-time in a World Cup match before, according to BBC Sport. [1]
Stacey Waaka scored after two minutes, but Fiji hit back through Losana Lutu, who finished a move started by captain Sereana Naitokatoka. Sienna Laing then extended Fiji’s lead. Waaka’s second try made it 12-10 at the break.
Fiji’s defence kept New Zealand at bay after half-time. Zehara Temara’s penalty kicks brought the Ferns level and put them ahead, before Raecene McGregor’s cross-field kick found Leianne Tufuga for the late try that secured the win.
New Zealand coach Ricky Henry called the match a “wake-up call”, saying his team had strayed from their plan and that rustiness was no excuse. Player Georgia Hale described the performance as ill-disciplined and untidy, and said the team had to work hard to recover.
New Zealand, who have reached all six Women’s World Cup finals and won the first three, next face France in Christchurch. Fiji meet Papua New Guinea. [1]
