Some 152,000 people in the Netherlands were still working as employees after reaching the state pension age in the second quarter of 2026, up from 96,000 in the same quarter of 2018, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) says. They made up 1.7% of all employees, compared with 1.2% eight years earlier. [1]
The share was higher among men: 2.3% of male employees were above the pension age, against 1.1% of female employees. The pension age rose gradually from 2013 to 67, while the number working beyond it also increased, CBS says. [1]
The highest proportions were in property rental and trading, at 4.3%, and transport and storage, at 3.6%. Public administration and government services had the lowest share, at 0.6%, followed by information and communications at 0.7%. [1]
Older employees also moved between industries, though they accounted for a small share of the overall movement. More than 20,000 workers above pension age entered an industry in the second quarter; 1.3% of all new entrants were in that age group. Workers above pension age made up 2.2% of those leaving employment. [1]
