Two people, including a minor, were killed and 16 injured when a bus carrying children and teenagers to school crashed near Lent in eastern France on Friday, the regional prefecture said. Three of the injured were in a serious condition, according to the Associated Press, which reported the prefecture’s figures.
The crash happened in the Ain region, north-east of Lyon. The bus left the road and ended up in a ditch, the town’s mayor, Yves Cristin, told French media. Emergency services and law enforcement were sent to the scene, and a helicopter was deployed, the BBC reported.
France’s education minister, Édouard Geffray, said his thoughts were with the students involved and their families. Transport minister Philippe Tabarot said he was travelling to the site. The cause of the crash has not been reported.
