Italy’s finance minister wants Christine Lagarde to say whether she will remain at the ECB until her term ends in October 2027.

European Central Bank president Christine Lagarde said she might leave a few months before her term ends in October 2027, but has made no announcement and will still be at the ECB in 2027. She made the comments in an interview with La Croix, published by the ECB on 30 September. [1]
Asked whether she would stand in France’s 2027 presidential election, Lagarde said it “would not be a good idea at all”. She cited the energy and personal sacrifice the role would demand, and noted that she is 70. [1]
Asked whether a possible early departure could be influenced by the French election, Lagarde did not endorse that suggestion. She said the French government in office at the time would put forward its preferences and seek agreement with other leaders on her successor. [1]
Italian finance minister Giancarlo Giorgetti called on European Central Bank president Christine Lagarde to clarify her plans.
