The Golden Globes have placed Michael Jackson biopic *Michael* in the drama category, where it may face a larger field. Producer Lionsgate has until 31 October to appeal.

The Golden Globes have ruled that *Michael*, the biographical film about Michael Jackson, must compete as a drama rather than as a comedy or musical, according to Dutch news site Nieuws.nl. The decision could put it in a larger and more competitive category, though producer Lionsgate can still challenge the ruling before 31 October. [1]
The Globes’ rules say songs must help advance a film’s story, rather than simply feature in it, for it to qualify as a comedy or musical. The organisation says Jackson’s songs do not serve that purpose in *Michael*. [1]
The distinction does not apply to the supporting-actor categories. Nieuws.nl reports that films including *The Odyssey*, *La Bola Negra*, *Project Hail Mary*, *Fjord* and *Club Kid* are also expected to compete in the drama categories. [1]
Similar disputes have arisen over music biopics before. *Ray*, *Walk the Line*, *Bohemian Rhapsody* and *Elvis* competed as dramas rather than comedies or musicals. [1]
The Golden Globes ceremony is scheduled for 10 January. The awards are among the indicators watched during the run-up to the Oscars. [1]
