Former manager Ian Chandler says a semi-final near miss helped keep Whitley Bay’s squad together before three straight FA Vase wins at Wembley.

Whitley Bay won the FA Vase at Wembley in 2009, 2010 and 2011, a run BBC Sport describes as unprecedented in non-league football. The club had also won the competition in 2002, making it the only four-time winner, according to BBC Sport. [1]
Under manager Ian Chandler, Whitley Bay beat Glossop North End 2–0 in the 2009 final, Wroxham 6–1 in 2010 and Coalville Town 3–2 in 2011. Paul Chow scored the winner against Coalville in the 86th minute. [1]
Chandler told BBC Sport that a semi-final defeat by Lowestoft Town in 2007–08 helped keep the squad together: players stayed because they wanted to show what they could do. Whitley Bay had lost the first leg 4–0 and, despite scoring three early goals in the return, could not overturn the deficit. [1]
Chandler was also an IT manager. Former player Paul Robinson said he worked with him both at Whitley Bay and at software company Sage. [1]
Chandler left in 2014. As of September 2026, Whitley Bay played in the ninth-tier Northern Football League and had not won another major honour since the 2011 FA Vase, BBC Sport reported. [1]
