Aglaia Balta, Greece’s representative and the Council’s president for October, set out the programme at a press conference on 1 October. She said the Council planned a briefing on children and armed conflict for 26 October, chaired by Greece’s foreign minister, and a debate on emerging technologies, with an emphasis on maritime security, for 29 October, chaired by its prime minister. The children and armed conflict briefing will mark 30 years of the Council’s mandate on the issue. [1]
Other planned meetings include debates on the Middle East on 15 October and women, peace and security on 27 October. Greece also plans a joint seminar with the African Union on 21–22 October, followed by an annual consultative meeting on 23 October. [1]
Balta said several straw polls were planned during October as the Council considers the next UN Secretary-General. She said Greece would try to build consensus and suggested the Council might make progress or even reach agreement that month. [1]
