Hundreds of Palestinians attended a mass funeral in Gaza City on Thursday, 1 October, for the remains of 105 people recovered from rubble left by an Israeli air strike in October 2023. The remains were buried at Sheikh Radwan cemetery. [3] [6]
Gaza’s Civil Defence said the remains were recovered from the Al-Taj residential area after a 17-day search carried out with Egyptian assistance. The 105 are people recovered nearly three years after the attack, not people killed on the day of the funeral. [2] [5]
Airwars says it geolocated Israeli military footage to the Al-Taj building. The military described the footage as showing strikes on a Hamas tunnel. Airwars records 118–119 civilian deaths in the attack on 25 October 2023, as well as one person it classifies as a militant. The 105 recovered remains cannot be added to that earlier death toll as a separate group of deaths. [7]
The burial comes amid a much wider effort to clear Gaza’s rubble. In July, the UN humanitarian office said nearly 630,000 tonnes had been cleared from roads and essential-service sites, against more than 60 million tonnes generated since October 2023. It cited insecurity, access restrictions, limits on machinery and spare parts, and fuel shortages as obstacles to further clearance. Those Gaza-wide figures do not measure how many people remain beneath the Al-Taj site. [9]
