The European Commission has approved AkzoNobel’s planned merger with US rival Axalta, on condition that AkzoNobel sells its European car-refinishing coatings business. The companies say they expect to complete the deal in early 2027, subject to approval from other regulators.
The Commission’s condition addresses concerns that the combined company could gain too much influence in coatings used to repair damaged or used cars. AkzoNobel and Axalta are currently the third-largest and largest suppliers of these coatings in Europe, respectively, according to ANP.
The business to be sold covers the European Economic Area. Its buyer must already operate in coatings or a related industry. AkzoNobel and Axalta described the Commission’s decision as an important milestone.
