US President Donald Trump welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland with a military flyover and a red carpet, the BBC reported on 24 September. The broadcaster described the carpet as 100ft (30m) long. Xi’s arrival came at the start of his visit to Washington, DC. [1]
Trump had been talking publicly about the visit for months, according to the BBC. Preparations included improvements to the White House and a new marble helipad, which the broadcaster reported was ready for Xi’s visit. Trump had also expressed regret that his new ballroom would not be finished in time. [1]
The BBC’s introduction to its video summarises an assessment by North America editor Sarah Smith that Trump has long openly admired strongman leaders. This is Smith’s analysis of his outlook, rather than an established explanation for the reception. [1]
The BBC account focuses on the welcome and preparations. It does not establish Trump’s personal motives for the reception or report substantive diplomatic outcomes. [1]
