Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have launched Tafouk TV with Russian support. The channel is intended to give greater prominence to the views of the three countries’ military governments and counter what they call Western ‘imperialist media’. Their criticism focuses particularly on French policy and news coverage. [1]
Military coups took place in all three countries between 2020 and 2023. The former French colonies have since distanced themselves from Paris and sought support from Moscow. Their governments accuse France of seeking access to resources including uranium, and say French media portray their countries negatively. [1]
Tafouk TV’s news chief, Abdoul Niang, said conspirators could undermine the state through screens and media as well as military barracks. The nature of Russia’s support for the channel remains unclear. [1]
