Thomas Rew has been named captain of England Lions for three T20 matches against West Indies A in St Kitts and Nevis in November, days after earning his first senior England call-up and a developmental contract. The 18-year-old is expected to become the youngest captain in Lions history, according to BBC Sport. [1]
Rew will lead a T20 squad that includes his older brother, James. He is also among three players — alongside Hampshire seamer Eddie Jack and Sussex all-rounder James Coles — selected for the Lions tour and England’s T20 series in Australia.
The Caribbean tour also features five one-day matches. Test batter Dan Lawrence will captain the squad for that series, with seamer Sam Cook joining him as both prepare for England’s three Tests in South Africa in December.
Rew captained England Under-19s to the World Cup final earlier this year and scored his first two first-class centuries for Somerset over the summer. He turns 19 on 29 November. If selected for the senior tour of Australia, he would be the third-youngest man to make an England debut in any format, after Rehan Ahmed and Brian Close, and the youngest to play for England against Australia, BBC Sport reports. Former England batter Jonathan Trott is taking charge of the Lions’ winter tours after Andrew Flintoff’s departure as head coach.
