Members of a Jewish congregation in The Hague described changes to their daily lives during King Willem-Alexander’s visit.

During a visit to the Liberal Jewish congregation Beth Jehoeda in The Hague on Tuesday, King Willem-Alexander heard from members who said they have felt less safe since Hamas’s attack on Israel on 7 October 2023. [1]
One woman told him that her son no longer wears a kippah outdoors for safety reasons. She said she no longer takes an Uber to the synagogue and no longer displays a mezuzah — a case containing a Jewish text — outside her door. When the king asked whether she could be openly Jewish, she said no. [1]
Rabbi Marianne van Praag told the king that children in the community encounter antisemitism and that some are afraid to say they are Jewish. [1]
The conversations also touched on Jewish children in The Hague who had changed schools. The king’s visit was intended to bring different generations together to discuss Jewish life and the community. [1]
