A 36-year-old British woman has died after being swept away while trying to rescue her two sons, who had been carried out to sea by a strong current while snorkelling off Bimini in the Bahamas, police said. The children were rescued.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force said the woman was snorkelling with her husband and sons near the island’s southern point on Tuesday when the current reportedly swept the boys away. She was later rescued and taken to a ferry dock, where CPR was reportedly given, before being taken to a local clinic. A doctor pronounced her dead.
Police said an autopsy would help establish the exact cause of death. They said foul play was not suspected. The woman was believed to be from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire.
A Foreign Office spokesperson said the department was in contact with local authorities and supporting the woman’s family.
