A fire has engulfed the Kehlsteinhaus, the building widely known as Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest, in Bavaria, and a police spokesperson says it is probably beyond saving. Firefighters were still battling the blaze on Friday evening, with about 200 called to the remote mountain site, according to police.
The building, constructed in 1937 and 1938 for Hitler to receive foreign diplomats and other guests, sits 1,834 metres above sea level on the Obersalzberg. It is now home to a restaurant and an exhibition on its history, and has been open to visitors since 1952. Police said the site’s height and location made the firefighting difficult. The spokesperson’s assessment that the building is probably lost was reported by German newspaper Bild.
