The UK competition regulator is examining proposed Meta terms that could allow it to use publishers’ content to develop its own products, while limiting companies’ choice.

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority is investigating proposed Meta terms that could let the company use content from news publishers and other businesses to develop its own products, without giving those companies sufficient choice, the regulator says.
The CMA will examine whether the terms would unfairly disadvantage publishers and other content companies, and whether they could amount to an abuse of a dominant position. Thousands of UK businesses rely on Meta to reach customers and audiences, the regulator says.
“We have heard concerns from news publishers and other businesses and will quickly investigate whether Meta’s proposed changes breach competition law,” CMA chief executive Sarah Cardell said, according to ANP and AFP. Meta has postponed introducing the new terms.
