Harry Kane’s new Bayern Munich contract until 2029 makes a return to the Premier League before the end of his career less likely, while strengthening England’s hopes of retaining their captain and record goalscorer for Euro 2028 and potentially the 2030 World Cup.
The 33-year-old’s deal expires shortly before his 36th birthday. Since joining Bayern from Tottenham in 2023, he has scored 102 goals in 102 Bundesliga matches, won two league titles and claimed three consecutive Golden Boot awards.
Kane has 213 Premier League goals, 47 short of Alan Shearer’s record of 260. Shearer scored for Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United; Kane’s tally came in 320 league appearances for Spurs. His new deal makes it harder to see him closing the gap, though his eventual return to English football cannot be ruled out.
The contract also leaves open the prospect of Kane playing for England at major tournaments beyond his mid-thirties. Euro 2028 will be held in the UK and Ireland; the 2030 World Cup is due to take place in Morocco, Portugal and Spain, with centenary matches in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.
Former England striker Chris Sutton told BBC Sport that Kane could continue for several years, pointing to his finishing, passing and reading of the game. Sutton said Euro 2028 “certainly shouldn’t be a problem”, while describing a role at the 2030 World Cup as a possibility rather than a certainty.
Kane’s importance to England was underscored at Euro 2024, when he scored three goals and finished joint top scorer but was substituted in every knockout match, including the final. He has since continued his strong form at Bayern, and the BBC report says England have no other striker close to matching his effectiveness.
Kane’s extended Bayern stay follows his record-breaking season, in which he scored 73 goals in 65 appearances for club and country and won the Ballon d’Or. The contract announcement therefore carries significance for both Bayern, who have secured their leading scorer, and an England side hoping to keep its most established forward in contention for future tournaments.
