Delhaize reports IT incident involving supermarket refrigeration systems

Belgian supermarket chain Delhaize says it has had an IT incident involving refrigeration equipment, after Belgian media reported that freezers and refrigerators had been hacked. At least 40 shops were reportedly affected, according to Nieuws.nl, citing ANP and Belga.

Delhaize is a sister company of Albert Heijn. A spokesperson for Albert Heijn in the Netherlands said they could not immediately say whether the Dutch chain was also experiencing problems.

The report did not specify how the refrigeration systems were affected or who was responsible. A previous report on supermarket freezer attacks and connected technology noted that internet-connected equipment can create security risks, but that being accessible online does not by itself mean a device can be hacked.
