Winterswijk opened the Netherlands’ first natural-ice skating rink of the season at 7.30am on Friday, with about 2.5 millimetres of ice on its 400-metre track.
The rink is run by the Winterswijk Ice Association in the eastern province of Gelderland. Ice master Hendrik van Prooije said good insulation and a white surface helped the track retain the cold. A special misting arm sprays water in thin layers, creating a smooth surface that can be skated on with relatively little ice.
Temperatures in Winterswijk stayed above freezing at the standard measuring height of 1.5 metres, but fell below freezing close to the ground. Van Prooije said he could not predict how long the rink would remain open.
