The UN Security Council has unanimously renewed its verification mission in Colombia for a year, while narrowing its mandate to monitoring the peace agreement’s provisions on former combatants’ reintegration and security guarantees.
Resolution 2833 extends the mission until 31 October 2027. The decision shifts attention away from rural reform, which Colombia’s government says should be led by domestic institutions. [UN Security Council](https://press.un.org/en/2026/sc16495.doc.htm)
The mission was established to monitor implementation of the 2016 agreement between the government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC-EP). The accord covered disarmament and reintegration, rural reform, political participation and transitional justice.
Colombia’s representative welcomed the change, saying the country needed security as well as peace. The United States also backed the narrower remit, describing rural reform as a national responsibility.
The decision drew a warning from Panama, whose delegate said the adjustment should not reduce the mission’s presence in local and regional areas. Russia voiced regret that rural reform had been dropped from its mandate, while Latvia stressed that rural inequality remained a factor contributing to violence.
The UK said implementation of the agreement and responses to security threats were mutually reinforcing. Its representative noted that more than 11,000 former combatants remained demobilised, while warning that violence and illicit economies continued to threaten communities.
