In remarks reported on 2 October, Rabin Baldewsingh, the Netherlands’ national coordinator against discrimination and racism, said King Willem-Alexander had set an example for other royal houses worldwide in addressing their roles in the colonial past. His comments were reported by the ANP news agency and published by Nieuws.nl. [1]
Baldewsingh said the king’s response to research by Leiden University showed the importance of acknowledging that history and made his own work easier. He also said the monarch recognised that racism and discrimination continue to affect people on the streets, in employment and in education. [1]
ANP reported that the king had described the Leiden University research as an encouragement. Baldewsingh urged more inclusive education, saying awareness should begin early and that efforts towards that goal remained too quiet. [1]
