Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany is in a stable condition in hospital after collapsing at the club’s training ground, and sporting director Max Eberl says his recovery will take weeks rather than days.
Kompany, 40, collapsed on Friday while watching the club’s second team train. He had recently been unwell with a virus but was on the touchline for Bayern’s Champions League match against Arsenal on Wednesday.
Eberl said examinations were continuing and that the club had not set a recovery timetable. “We need to firstly figure out what it is and then we’ll discuss calmly what the recovery time is to be,” he said.
Bayern considered asking for Sunday’s Bundesliga match at Freiburg to be postponed, Eberl said, but decided that playing and winning would be the best tonic for Kompany.
He also said the club needed to protect the coach from pushing himself too hard. Kompany’s assistant, Aaron Danks, said he had spoken to him in hospital and that the club’s coaching staff were handling football operations.
The latest update follows earlier reports on Kompany’s collapse and hospitalisation and his stable condition.
