French Polynesian President Moetai Brotherson called on France to enter decolonisation talks under UN auspices at a UN committee hearing on 5 October. France said it would consult Polynesian stakeholders, but that announcement did not amount to agreement on a proposed UN visit to the territory. French Polynesia is one of 17 territories on the UN’s list of Non-Self-Governing Territories. [1] [3]
Brotherson’s appeal followed a 24 September vote in French Polynesia’s Assembly. Tahiti Infos reported 54 votes in favour of a resolution seeking a UN visiting mission with France’s agreement and talks about institutional options within the French constitutional framework. Two representatives abstained and one was absent. The broad vote was not a shared endorsement of independence: members of the autonomist Tapura group said their support did not mean backing a self-determination process. [2]
France’s delegate defended the territory’s existing autonomy and supported continued direct dialogue. A French representative also said the president and government would consult Polynesian stakeholders. That differs from Brotherson’s request for talks under UN auspices rather than another discussion confined to France’s institutional framework. [1] [3]
Some petitioners raised the legacy of France’s nuclear tests. Recent monitoring estimated that artificial radioactivity from French and international tests accounted for less than 0.1% of the annual effective radiation dose for an adult on Tahiti, excluding medical exposure; it cannot establish what people were exposed to during the tests. A 2023 thyroid-cancer study found no clear overall association with reconstructed doses, although one sensitivity analysis found a significant increase in risk. Its authors cautioned that the study had very low statistical power. [1] [5] [6]

After the hearing, Brotherson said he had received conflicting signals about the proposed UN visit. He said he would wait for an answer from France’s president before treating the diplomat’s response as definitive. [4]
