The executive order changes terminology across US federal agencies but uses the existing legal definition of AI for its own purposes.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on 29 September directing US executive departments and agencies to use “super intelligence” and “SI” instead of “artificial intelligence” and “AI” in official correspondence, websites, reports and other non-statutory documents. The instruction applies only to the extent permitted by law; it does not impose a naming requirement on Congress or private companies. [1] [2]
For the order’s purposes, the new terms cover the technologies and systems already included in the US statutory definition of AI. The change in name does not, by itself, establish a new technological threshold. The order also says agencies are not required to alter previously issued regulations, contracts, grants or other historical documents. [2] [3]
The order formalises a change Trump announced at the UN the previous week. The Associated Press reported that State Department staff had been instructed to use the new wording and that US representatives used “SI” at a UN Security Council meeting on 23 September. [4]
Trump has given his science adviser 60 days to propose legislation defining “super intelligence” and addressing existing references to AI in US law. That deadline is for a proposal to the president, not for a change in the law. The order sets no general deadline for agencies to complete the terminology switch. [2]
