Gareth Ritter, 44, of Bryngwyn, Monmouthshire, was also ordered to carry out 250 hours of community service and will be placed on the sex offenders’ register for life, the BBC reported.
Ritter, a teacher and brass band conductor who appeared in the Channel 4 series *Educating Cardiff*, initially denied the assault but changed his plea to guilty during his trial in October.
The court heard that he had offered to drive the 17-year-old home from an event in Cardiff in 2015, but stopped at a flat he owned in Cardiff Bay. Inside, he touched and kissed her.
The woman told police about the assault after being contacted about images of her found in Ritter’s possession during an unrelated investigation. Ritter had previously admitted two counts of making an indecent photograph of a child and one count of distributing an indecent photograph of a child.
In a victim impact statement, the woman said she had blamed herself and had later been diagnosed with depression. She said Ritter had abused his position and was someone she had looked up to.
Judge Dyfed Llion Thomas called the assault an abuse of trust and said he believed Ritter had planned it. He said he suspended the sentence “with some reluctance”, taking account of Ritter’s previous good character and the potential impact on his family.
Ritter’s barrister said he was sorry for the pain he had caused, had lost his careers in teaching and music and was seeking therapy. The judge said he had “grave reservations” about whether Ritter was truly remorseful.
A further hearing will consider court costs and whether to impose a restraining order and a sexual harm prevention order.
