Ursula von der Leyen says Hungary could receive several million euros in frozen EU recovery funds by year-end, but further work on academic freedom is still required.

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen says Hungary could receive several million euros from the EU’s frozen recovery funds by the end of the year, provided it makes further progress on academic freedom.
Speaking in Budapest on Friday, von der Leyen said reforms under Prime Minister Péter Magyar were helping to tackle corruption and restore the rule of law. The money comes from the EU’s coronavirus recovery fund and had been withheld because Hungary was not complying with EU rules.
The announcement does not amount to an unconditional release: von der Leyen said Hungary still had more to do to restore academic freedom. The country has already been allocated several million euros in frozen funds on a number of occasions in recent months, according to ANP.
