Storm Austen left more than 161,000 households without electricity in north-west France on Friday morning and almost 10,000 properties without power in Cornwall, according to a report by Dutch news agency ANP. The storm also brought orange weather warnings to both areas and prompted transport restrictions in France and school closures in England.
French weather service Météo-France recorded gusts of about 140 kilometres per hour overnight. The Met Office recorded a gust of 122 kilometres per hour near St Mary’s Airport, off Cornwall, and one of 114 kilometres per hour in Cornwall itself.
The report said the storm was also expected to be felt in parts of the Netherlands and Belgium on Friday. Our earlier coverage of Austen’s disruption in southern Britain reported power cuts and transport problems there as the storm moved through.
