Lyon has banned all protests in the city this Saturday after demonstrations across France last week descended into riots and looting, according to an ANP report carried by Nieuws.nl. The ban comes as the “Yellow Vests” movement has announced further action across the country.
Authorities have also imposed precautionary protest bans at some other locations, including parts of Paris. President Emmanuel Macron is due to meet ministers and intelligence officials on Thursday to discuss possible further measures ahead of the planned demonstrations.
France’s interior ministry has advised shopkeepers to secure their windows, check camera systems and remove items from the street that could be used to cause damage, including tables and chairs.
Protests on 17 October turned violent in several places. In Marseille, the public prosecutor told BFMTV that between 1,800 and 3,000 people were involved in looting the city centre, according to ANP.
