Twenty-three police officers were injured during riots in Cologne on Saturday evening, and police said they seized large numbers of knives, hammers, Molotov cocktails and homemade fireworks around demonstrations in the city.
Police said a 56-year-old man was due to appear before a judge on Sunday on suspicion of attacking officers. Homemade Molotov cocktails and knives were found in his rucksack, according to the police statement reported by ANP.
Police said some people had travelled to Cologne to riot and use the gathering as cover for violence. Later that evening, groups of teenagers vandalised property in the city. Police said those groups were not connected to the demonstrators.
Demonstrations also turned violent elsewhere in Germany. A major shopping street in Frankfurt was looted, while police were attacked in Berlin and Hamburg, the report said.
