The government has approved drilling at the Jackdaw gas field but has yet to decide on Rosebank, renewing debate over energy security, bills, jobs and climate commitments.

The UK government has approved drilling at the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea, while delaying a decision on the Rosebank oil field. The choices bring competing arguments over energy security, bills, jobs and climate impacts back into focus. [1]
Jackdaw lies about 150 miles east of Aberdeen. Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh said gas from the field would reach homes and businesses this month, but acknowledged it would not lower bills this winter. She argued the project would support energy security, with tax revenue going to an Energy Wealth Fund for low-carbon and renewable projects. [1]
Rosebank, about 80 miles north-east of Shetland, is still under consideration. Fahnbulleh called it a “different proposition”, saying its oil would be exported. [1]
Both projects had received approval under previous governments, but environmental campaigners challenged the decisions in court. Consent was ruled unlawful and a more detailed assessment of environmental impacts was required. [1]
The debate reflects a difficult balance: supporters of domestic production cite energy security, tax receipts and the economic effects on oil and gas communities, while critics point to emissions and the climate consequences of further fossil-fuel development. [1]
Labour’s 2024 manifesto said it would not revoke existing licences and would manage existing fields for their lifetimes, but would issue no new licences to explore new fields. Jackdaw and Rosebank licences had already been issued before Labour took office. [1]
