A 43-year-old man from Amsterdam has been arrested on suspicion of possible involvement in one or more car fires in Almelo, police said. The fires were reported late on Saturday, but investigators have not established whether they were connected.
Police traced the man after receiving what they described as a clear description. Four cars were set alight in a short period at M.Th. Steynstraat, Bornerbroeksestraat, Platanenstraat and J.B. van Loghemstraat, according to ANP, carried by Nieuws.nl.
Before the arrest, police used the Burgernet neighbourhood alert network to ask people in the area to stay alert and share information. Around half an hour later, they thanked residents for keeping watch and passing on information.
The four fires reported in Almelo within half an hour had previously prompted the alert. Police have not said whether the arrested man is suspected in all four cases.
