The number of non-EU citizens who fled Ukraine and held temporary protection in the EU stood at 4.43 million on 31 August, up by 3,290 people, or 0.1%, from the end of July, Eurostat reported. Eurostat says its figures count people with protection status, not everyone who has fled the war. [1]
Eurostat reported that Germany had the largest number of beneficiaries, at 1,294,555, followed by Poland with 939,395 and Czechia with 398,360. According to Eurostat, Czechia had the highest rate relative to population: 36.5 beneficiaries per thousand inhabitants, compared with 9.8 across the EU. [1]
Eurostat reported that registered numbers rose in 24 of the EU’s 27 countries. According to the agency, Germany recorded the largest increase, of 4,330, while Poland recorded the largest fall, of 13,665. Eurostat says in its methodological notes that countries differ in how they remove people from their registers and that large monthly declines in registered beneficiaries can result when deregistration is not continuous.
