Children and relatives from whom they were separated handed a letter to members of the Dutch House of Representatives on 29 September, asking parliament to commission an independent inquiry into out-of-home placements and family separations linked to the benefits scandal. More than 300 affected children support the request, ANP reported. [1]
The children and young adults behind the letter want investigators to examine what information was used in decisions about individual placements, and whether the benefits scandal influenced the separation of their families. [1]
Figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS), cited by ANP, put the number of children in affected families placed out of home between 2015 and 2022 at more than 2,000. Nearly 650 of them were still living away from home at the end of June 2022. [1]
