Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, deepening the pressure on manager Michael Carrick after his side won only one of their first nine Premier League matches. United were reduced to 10 men when Lisandro Martínez was sent off in the second half.
United had chances before the break, but Matheus Cunha’s goal was ruled out for offside and Amad Diallo shot over. Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead five minutes after half-time, capitalising on poor defending.
About 15 minutes later, Martínez received a second yellow card for a foul in the penalty area after a VAR review. Cole Palmer converted the penalty to make it 2-0. United, who brought on Joshua Zirkzee, could not recover with 10 players.
Carrick was already under pressure following a poor start to the season and a 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth the previous week. United were 16th in the league at the time of the Chelsea match.
