James Trafford made his competitive England debut in Saturday’s 3–2 Nations League defeat to Spain, giving manager Thomas Tuchel a chance to assess the Leeds goalkeeper alongside established first choice Jordan Pickford. [1]
Tuchel said Trafford deserved two matches during the international break and that the two goalkeepers would get “two consecutive matches each”. He said Pickford had done nothing wrong, but England wanted to use the competition to assess Trafford. [1]
Trafford saved a first-half effort from Ferran Torres against Spain but conceded three goals. Pickford has made 91 England appearances and kept 46 clean sheets. He played every minute of England’s 2026 World Cup campaign before the third-place play-off against France, when Dean Henderson started. [1]
After five Premier League appearances each this season, Trafford has made 20 saves to Pickford’s 15, with save rates of 85.7% and 83.3% respectively. Both have conceded three goals, excluding own goals. [1]
