The Dutch domestic abuse and child protection advice service Veilig Thuis handled nearly 6,500 chat conversations in August 2026, more than twice its July total, Dutch news agency ANP reported. The chat had previously been available only during office hours; it is now open around the clock. [1]
Veilig Thuis says more chats now take place outside office hours than during them. Before the change, people could call outside office hours only in situations involving immediate danger, a spokesperson said. The August figure counts conversations, not individual people or incidents. [1]
JA21 MP Ingrid Coenradie proposed allocating €2.5 million a year to keep the chat open around the clock. The proposal received unanimous support in the Dutch House of Representatives, ANP reported. A Veilig Thuis spokesperson said the amount would be sufficient. [1]
