Police used tear gas and made several arrests after a new gathering in central Paris on Sunday, a day after riots broke out in the capital and elsewhere in France. The arrests were reported by Le Parisien, according to Dutch news site Nieuws.nl. [1]
The gathering took place at Place de la République, where protests had also escalated on Saturday. BFMTV reported that Sunday’s gathering had not been authorised. Several French media said calls to attend had circulated on social media.
France Info also reported calls for a gathering in Rennes and said people had assembled in Lille, where demonstrations had got out of hand on Saturday.
President Emmanuel Macron’s office said he would address the nation at 8pm on Sunday. Government ministers had condemned Saturday’s violence and damage; unrest in Paris continued into the night.
