Sanne van Dijke reached the last 16 of the women’s under-70kg event at the World Judo Championships in Baku after beating Ecuador’s Celinda Corozo and Croatia’s Lara Cvjetko. Cvjetko leads the weight class’s world rankings, according to ANP. [1]
Van Dijke, who won bronze at last year’s championships in Budapest, defeated Corozo in her opening bout before overcoming Cvjetko. Fellow Dutch judoka Margit de Voogd went out in the first round of the same event, losing to Switzerland’s Gioia Vetterli. [1]
The Dutch team had yet to win a medal when ANP reported on 8 October. Joanne van Lieshout had lost the under-63kg bronze-medal bout to Mongolia’s Enkhriilen Lkhagvatogoo the previous day, while Amber Gersjes, Naomi van Krevel and debutant Shannon van de Meeberg had also been eliminated early. [1]
Van Dijke lost her last-16 bout against Spain’s Ai Tsunoda Roustant by a yuko, the Dutch news agency ANP reported. The narrow defeat ends her run in the women’s under-70kg category at the judo world championships in Baku. [2]
