Iran’s Revolutionary Guard navy said on Sunday that it had seized what it identified as a US REMUS 600 underwater drone in the Strait of Hormuz. It called this its second capture of a US underwater drone this month, but gave no date or precise location for the latest incident. [2]
The Guards said a coordinated operation involving electronic warfare had caught the vehicle, which they accused of spying. They said specialists had taken it for data recovery. US forces had not commented on the new claim at the time of a Europa Press report on Sunday. [2] [4]
A REMUS 600 can be fitted with sensors for different missions, including searching for buried mines, according to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. [6]
The earlier incident involved a different model. US Central Command spokesperson Captain Tim Hawkins told DefenseScoop that an Anduril Dive-LD had malfunctioned while surveying regional waters and had not collected sensitive data. Separately, a photograph reported to be circulating before Sunday’s announcement appeared to show a REMUS 600 on an Iranian beach. It is unclear whether it shows the vehicle the Guards have now named. [5] [7]
