French police arrested 1,314 people during Saturday’s demonstrations, France’s interior ministry said, while 53 officers were injured and 24 shops were looted. The protests were held in several cities against issues including the rising cost of living.
Police intervened during unrest at some demonstrations. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said most of the protests had gone well, and the ministry described the night as “calm”.
A week earlier, large demonstrations had also been accompanied by serious rioting and looting. French authorities increased police numbers and took other measures to prevent a repeat of that violence.
