Egypt have dismissed Hossam Hassan as national football coach, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced on Saturday. Hassan had led the team to the last 16 at this summer’s World Cup, where they lost to eventual runners-up Argentina after a turbulent finish.
The EFA said recent events had negatively affected the national team’s image and stability. Hassan had been in the Egyptian news in recent days over a conflict with his former wife.
Ali Maher, 52, has been appointed as Hassan’s successor. He joins from Egyptian club Ceramica Cleopatra FC, based in Giza.
