Fourteen Dutch fireworks retailers had applied for compensation by Tuesday morning under a scheme introduced ahead of a ban on consumer fireworks this New Year’s Eve. Around 850 retailers are eligible to claim.

The Netherlands has received 14 applications for compensation from fireworks retailers since a new scheme opened on Tuesday, as a ban on consumer fireworks for New Year’s Eve leaves shops unable to make their usual sales this year.
The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), which administers the scheme, reported the total at about 10.30am on Tuesday. Around 850 retailers sold fireworks around New Year in previous years.
Eligible retailers can claim the profit they expect to miss out on for one year, plus 15 per cent and €3,500 for each sales location, according to the agency’s scheme details as reported by ANP. The government has set aside €100 million for compensation related to the ban.
The report says retailers are entitled to compensation in principle, so the scheme is not a fixed fund that will run out once claims reach a certain amount. Fireworks importers can receive a larger compensation package.
VuurwerkCheck, the trade association for fireworks shops, has previously announced it intends to take the government to court over the compensation offered to its members.
