Pope Leo XIV needs no further treatment for lung cancer after follow-up tests confirmed the disease was confined to his lung, the Vatican said on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.
The pope’s doctors said an examination of tissue removed during surgery confirmed the cancer had not spread. A subsequent oncology assessment found no further treatment was necessary, AP reported.
Leo, 71, had the lower lobe of his right lung removed. The Vatican said on 13 October that an examination during the operation had confirmed lung adenocarcinoma and that the surgery had been successful, with no complications.
The pope returned to public engagements after leaving hospital on Saturday, four days after the operation. He appeared at his weekly audience in St Peter’s Square on Wednesday.
