A lawyer for one of seven men accused in a Cornell lawsuit wants Letitia James to step aside from the inquiry because of comments she made before her appointment.

A lawyer for one of seven men accused in a lawsuit over an alleged rape at Cornell University has called for New York Attorney General Letitia James to step aside as special prosecutor. The lawyer argues that comments James made before her appointment raise questions about whether she can assess the case independently. [1]
The lawyer pointed to a 28 September post on X in which James described what the woman had endured as “horrific and unacceptable” and expressed support for her and other survivors. In a statement sent to CBS News, the lawyer sought James’s voluntary recusal, while saying this was neither an accusation of corruption or bad faith nor a claim that a court had found her legally disqualified. [1]
The woman, identified as Jane Doe in the lawsuit, alleges that she was drugged and raped at a fraternity party in October 2024. She also accuses Cornell of failing to protect her. [1]
Governor Kathy Hochul appointed James to investigate the case and the initial responses of law enforcement and Cornell. Asked about impartiality, Hochul said James would follow the facts and pursue charges if the evidence supported them. [1]
