France plans to deploy more riot police this weekend, ahead of a new Yellow Vests protest call and after unrest that included clashes and widespread looting in several cities.
France will increase the deployment of riot police this weekend as authorities prepare for a fresh call by the Yellow Vests movement to demonstrate on Saturday, according to a report by BFMTV cited by the French news agency ANP [1].
The move follows a weekend of protests that escalated into clashes with police in major cities. Looting was reported on a large scale in Marseille and Paris, including in the capital on Sunday, ANP reported [1].
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said measures were due to take effect that evening to prevent further looting, but did not specify what they would be. He also said officials were considering ways to maintain order.
The response comes amid criticism from mayors and government ministers over the handling of the unrest. In Limoges, the town hall was set alight and was largely destroyed, according to ANP [1].
